A smart thermostat installed with default settings on a heat pump can turn on the backup heat strips every time it recovers from a setback. That can make winter bills go up, not down. Getting the configuration right is most of the value.
Common questions
Why is my thermostat screen blank?
Check the batteries first, then the breaker for the indoor unit and the furnace service switch. Many thermostats get power from the HVAC system, so a tripped float switch from a clogged drain can also blank the screen.
Can any smart thermostat work with my system?
Not always. Many need a common (C) wire for power, and heat pumps need a thermostat configured for heat pump staging and aux heat. A wrong setup can run the expensive backup heat far more than necessary.
Where should my thermostat be located?
On an interior wall, away from direct sun, supply vents, kitchens and exterior doors. A thermostat in the wrong spot can make the whole house uncomfortable.
