Thermal Services isn't a call center with a fleet of strangers, and it isn't one guy with a van either. It's a family business with a small crew, run today by Josh Seger. Josh runs Thermal Services today and is the name neighbors pass along on Nextdoor: "ask for Josh." He holds associate degrees in HVAC and in Construction Management, and he's the one who picks up the phone. Tim has been part of that crew for years; reviews going back to 2017 thank him by name.

All HVAC questions Why is my AC running but the house won't cool down?
Start with the air filter and the thermostat. A clogged filter chokes airflow, and a thermostat set to 'on' instead of 'auto' can make it feel like the system never catches up. If the filter is clean and the outdoor unit isn't running, or the air from the vents isn't cool, the usual causes are a failed capacitor, a dirty outdoor coil, or low refrigerant from a leak. Those need a technician.
AC running but not cooling How long does an HVAC system last in South Carolina?
Here, a central air conditioner or heat pump typically lasts about 10 to 15 years, since it cools hard for much of the year. A heat pump works in both seasons, so it tends to sit on the shorter end. A gas furnace often lasts 15 to 20 years or more because it only works a few months a year. Maintenance and installation quality change those numbers more than the brand does.
Should I repair or replace my air conditioner?
A common rule of thumb: multiply the system's age by the repair cost. If that's more than about $5,000, replacement deserves a serious look. Also weigh whether it uses R-22, whether it has had repeated repairs, how high the bills are, and whether rooms are uncomfortable. A good contractor will tell you when a repair is the smarter money.
How often should I change my air filter?
For the common 1-inch filter, check it monthly and change it every one to three months. Change it more often with pets, construction dust, or anyone in the house with allergies. Thicker 4- or 5-inch media filters usually last six months to a year. When you can't see light through it, it's past due.
What is 'aux heat' or 'emergency heat' on my thermostat?
Aux heat is the backup electric heat strip in your air handler. It kicks in automatically when the heat pump needs help, during defrost or on the coldest mornings. Emergency heat turns the heat pump off and runs on the strips alone, which works but costs a lot more to run. If 'aux' shows up constantly on mild days, something is wrong with the heat pump.
